Eastern Flyway

Eastern Flyway>Migration stopovers>China

The eastern Siberian Crane population migrates along a 5,100 km migration route following the Yana, Indigirka, and Kolyma River valleys (Russia), central and eastern Mongolia, and then into eastern China, with several resting areas and longer-term stopover points. Although some of these important traditional stopover points are now protected by the Zhalong, Momoge, Xianghai, Keerqin, and Shuangtaizihekou Nature Reserves, others remain unprotected.

2004, SPRING AND AUTUMN

Momoge National N.R. is a stopover site important for migration Siberian Cranes. The reserve owns wide wetlands to provide a fine living condition for waterfowls to stopover. One Siberian Crane population with 570 more individuals was found here in 2000 spring.

In order to strengthen the protection and monitoring of migratory waterfowls, Momoge N.R. set three protection station and 6 monitoring sites in 2004. Financed by the ICF, Northeast Notmal University and the Administrative Bureau of Momoge N.R. conducted a joint monitor on the migratory trends of Siberian Cranes in 2004 spring. From 26 March to 9 May Siberian Cranes stopped over at Momoge N.R. for about 45 days. On 23 April the 778 individuals found at Taipingshan is the highest record in history of the reserve.

In 2004 autumn the number of migrating Siberian Cranes reached 126 individuals.
