According to Prof. Zhou Haixiang, the technical advisor for Liaoning Environmental Protection Volunteer Association, the majority of Siberian Cranes arrived at Huanzidong Reservoir Wetland in Shenyang, Liaoning Province, in the beginning of November with the record over 800 on 7 November. Historically it is higher number of Siberian Cranes (doubled from the past). The biggest flock of about 500 Siberian Cranes left on 8 November along with 240 Hooded Cranes, 50 Eurasian Cranes and 5 Red-crowned Cranes. Shenyang Environmental Protection Bureau is planning to establish a Municipal-level Nature Reserve at Huanzidong. WWF-China is also looking for opportunities in promoting it to a Ramsar Site, or any other collaboration and support. Please give credit for attached pictures to Prof. Zhou Haixiang. 10 October 2006
Two along Siberian Cranes observed on 30 August and 5 September kept in Naurzum Lakes until 14 September. We interrupted our monitoring from 15 September to 3 October. Anyway we get information from local people that these two cranes departed Naurzum near 20 September: one flying Siberian Crane was sighted near Razdolnoye Village (87 km to the west from Aksuat Lake)on 20 September, and the other Siberian Crane was sighted on Shoptikol Lake (68 km to the west-south-west from Aksuat Lake) on 21-22 September by Vladimir Parastatov, Head of Local Hunting Society.
On 5 October we surveyed few Naurzum Lakes including Aksuat Lake, but we didn’t see Siberian Cranes. But on 5 October during observation of eastern part of Aksuat Lake we sighted two Siberian Cranes in the flock of Eurasian Cranes. After 4 p.m. Eurasian Cranes left the lake, but Siberian Cranes joined swans and continued to eat.
On 6 October birds moved to the south part of the lake. These two Siberian Cranes kept together. Probably this is a pair. Both Siberian Cranes are not banded.
Siberian Cranes were not observed after 6 October. Information from Yevgeni Bragin, Naurzum State Nature Reserve, Kazakhstan.
5 September 2006
On 5 September one more Siberian Crane was sighted in Aksuat Lake in Naurzum State Nature Reserve, North Kazakhstan. Thus two Siberian Cranes are staying at this lake. They are not a pair. At least during two watching days they didn’t join and walked separately on distance about 1-1.5 km. Information from Yevgeni Bragin, Naurzum State Nature Reserve, Kazakhstan.

On 2 July2006 Dr. Tseveenmyadag, Mongolian Academy of Sciences, sighted a flock of 9 Siberian Cranes near Turgenii Tsagaan Lake, Bayan-Dun soum, Dornod Province. It is the largest number ever recorded for the Siberian Cranes in Mongolia. He was conducting surveys on swan geese in Eastern Mongolian wetlands as a part of project run by Wildlife Science and Conservation Center. During the survey, he recorded two other sightings of Siberian Cranes in two different locations: 1 in Khokh Lake and 2 in Galuut Lake, both in Dornod Province. Information from Nyambayar Batbayar, Wildlife Science and Conservation Center, Mongolia. |
